Our first beach cleanup of 2020 was a huge success! Despite the unpredictable weather, we had almost 40 volunteers come out and together we picked up over 120lbs of trash in two hours! Everyone was in good spirits and happy to help keep the community of Ocean Beach clean.
This was our first beach cleanup partnered with San Diego-based craft brewery Saint Archer Brewing Company. At first glance, it may seem like a sustainable swimwear brand and a craft brewery don't have much in common. However, Saint Archer built its brand by bringing together action sports athletes and creatives alike. Earlier this month, Saint Archer debuted its first Super Bowl commercial featuring Paul Rodriguez skating through OB. It's inspiring to see a local brand that has achieved so much success, still paying homage to its roots and taking on an active role in the community.
Through I Love A Clean San Diego's Adopt-A-Beach program, we borrowed buckets, grabbers and reusable gloves to keep our cleanup as low-waste as possible. For this cleanup, we also expanded our reach to also cover a few of the surrounding blocks downtown. With the rain, there was plenty of trash for volunteers to clear out from the streets and alleys.
The most prevalent items found were cigarette butts with over 400 collected in the 1-mile area. Miscellaneous styrofoam and plastic pieces also made up a bulk of the count, with between 100-150 collected of each. These small pieces take forever to break apart and result in even smaller microplastics that eventually find their way into the ocean.
Following the cleanup, we raffled off a custom Saint Archer skateboard along with some Santos Swim merch before heading over to The Holding Company to enjoy $2 Saint Archer pints. Beach cleanups aren't the answer to the global waste crisis, but it's a great way to bring people together to do good, learn about ways to reduce waste and live more consciously. We can't wait to see you at the next one!
