Hannah McDermott is the Designer + Creative Director of Santos Swim, a globally-conscious brand that uses fabric made from recycled fishing nets to create gorgeous and vibrant swimwear inspired by world travels. She’s a Southern California native with San Clemente roots. Growing up with the beach in her backyard, the ocean holds a special place in her heart.

Last month we were invited by The Zero Shop in Capitola, CA to have a pop-up at their new store. What initially started as an online business has now become a beautifully curated brick+mortar location with a collection of products to help make the transition to zero-waste living. Needless to say, we loved it right away!

On June 15th we hosted our first beach cleanup in Pacific Beach, San Diego. We had 30 amazing volunteers come together to gather 20lbs of trash! Through I Love A Clean San Diego's Adopt-A-Beach program, we were able to borrow Zero Waste cleanup supplies including buckets, grabbers and reusable gloves. Some volunteers also brought their own containers and reusable gloves from home.

Today is World Oceans Day, a day to acknowledge the amazing benefits of our oceans and raise awareness about how we can collectively protect it. With oceans covering more than 71% of our planet, it should be clear that we need to treat them with care. However, all too often the ocean is dismissed as "too big to fail"and treated as a big human landfill. This cannot continue.

March has arrived and we will welcome in the Spring Equinox this month, coming one step closer to warmer weather! We have a lot to highlight this month including: International Women’s Day and World Water Day.

September brings us the fresh start of a new season, allowing us to set new goals and form new daily habits. But summer isn't over yet! Ghost fishing nets are haunting our seas and wreaking havoc on the marine environment year after year. These abandoned fishing nets are silent killers that make an involuntary migration around the world's oceans and trap unsuspecting wildlife along the way. According to World Animal Protection, it is estimated that over 130,000 whales, dolphins, seals, sea turtles, and other marine animals are killed each year due to ghost gear. We kick off May with International Workers' Day, a day celebrating the working class and laborers around the world. Our first beach cleanup of 2020 was a huge success! Despite the unpredictable weather, we had almost 40 volunteers come out and together we picked up over 120lbs of trash in two hours! Everyone was in good spirits and happy to help keep the community of Ocean Beach clean. 

Music festivals bring people from all around the world together for a weekend of fun, disconnected from the "real world" and immersed in a joyful dancing bliss. Festival lovers will travel across countries to see their favorite artists perform together and they have a list of must-haves to bring along. This year was our first time being able to participate in Small Business Saturday and we had scheduled a pop-up alongside other local San Diego businesses at Culture Brewing Co in Ocean Beach. Since the brewery is right up the street from Ocean Beach Pier, we decided to make a day of it and organize a beach cleanup beforehand. In total we had 20 incredible volunteers come out to clean up our beach and together we gathered almost 10lbs of trash!

Edward Enninful, British Vogue's editor-in-chief since 2017, has evolved the magazine to be more diverse by featuring influential people of all races, genders, backgrounds, and ages on the fashion Bible's cover. 

I joined entrepreneur groups, reached out to contacts in the swimwear industry, and researched as much as I could about ethical fashion - but still couldn't find all the answers I needed to launch my sustainable swimwear brand. I really needed a complete education in sustainable fashion, but enrolling in fashion school seemed farfetched at this point.
